Patterson Street Greenway Improvements
The Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) Project Management & Engineering (PM&E) and Traffic Departments are working to improve the non-motorized experience along Patterson Street, between Debar Road and Chester Creek.

Location & Context
Neighborhood Collector
Patterson S. is a neighborhood collector, which means its purpose is to provide access to local schools, recreational and residential areas. The street should provide pedestrian facilities to allow for safe and more comfortable access between destinations.
Residential & Institutional Uses
Roads help us get to places! Chester Valley is on the east side of Patterson St.; Begich Middle School is accessible via a pathway on Chester Court; a church is on the west side of Patterson; and a trail connection is at its south end.
Local Plans & Policies
The MOA's Non-Motorized Plan identifies an enhanced shared roadway from Sherwood to E 10th Ave, proposes a bicycle corridor for Patterson St, and is a high priority project for missing sidewalks between Debarr Rd. to Chester Creek.
Roadway Features
Intermittent Sidewalks
Patterson St. currently has a sidewalk on the east side of the roadway, but only provides a sidewalk on the west side between E 16th Ave and Potomac Dr.

The corridor is part of the Anchorage Neighborhood Greenway Program!
MOA Traffic Department is leading a Neighborhood Greenways Program to improve links between our non-motorized network and connect neighborhoods to greenbelt trails, parks, schools, and other destinations. Neighborhood Greenways are streets that prioritize people walking, bicycling and rolling and aim to comfortably connect them to our urban trail system. Patterson Street now has street markings called sharrows (a painted bike symbol and chevron) to call more attention to how and where bicyclists will be riding on the street and will be getting new signage to identify the corridor as a greenway.

More improvements are being considered
MOA PM&E and the Traffic Department are considering alternatives for improving non-motorized experiences.
MOA PM&E are developing design alternatives to further improve Patterson St. The results of the 2023 survey and conversations with community members are informing alternatives that will be shared for your input when they are available as part of a draft Concept Report.
